Well-being in the Legal-Profession

AER Counseling provides trauma-informed therapy and is an advocate for providing trauma informed legal services. With a wealth of experience and having written extensively about law student and lawyer well-being, AER Counseling’s aim is to further the conversation about well-being in the legal profession and hold space for those within it.

Lawyers are uniquely trained to advocate on behalf of their clients zealously and assertively. Due to the adversarial system in our country, this pace can quickly become exhausting resulting in depression, burnout, and even substance abuse. “Lawyers have been identified as a professional group that uses alcohol and other drugs more than other occupations.” (Source)

The constant connectivity that is required, endless hours preparing, and the culture of how lawyers typically socialize can, overtime, erode our sense of well-being and diminish our overall health. It is no surprise that lawyers and those in the legal profession are struggling and suffering, silently, because the legal profession has traditionally not been involved nor concerned about the health and wellbeing of its very members.
